South Harris and the Western Isles offer the holidaymaker unrivaled scenery and natural beauty, from the rugged fjord-like coastline in the east of the island, to the pristine sandy beaches of the west such as Luskintyre and Horgabost, pictured here.

The islands attract many rare species of birds and animals, including grey seals and otters; On a sunny day you might be able to spot them enjoying a snooze on the rocks by the coast.

Also within easy reach are a number of historical sites ranging from the ancient St. Clements Church in Rodel built in 1500 AD to the famous standing stones of Callinish in Lewis, which date from 2000 BC.

Should you wish to explore further afield, the Sound of Harris ferry service between Leverburgh in Harris and Berneray in North Uist gives the holidaymaker the opportunity to visit the Uists and it is possible to visit the most southerly points of Uist and return to Harris on the same day, driving at a leisurely pace.

If you wish to visit some of the smaller islands around Harris such as Taransay, home of the BBC’s Castaway 2000 series, organised boat trips operate during the summer season.
